Product Overview

What Are Ductile Iron Castings?

Ductile iron, also known as nodular cast iron or spheroidal graphite iron, features graphite in spherical nodules rather than flakes. This unique microstructure gives ductile iron exceptional strength, toughness, and ductility – properties that often allow it to directly replace cast steel at a lower cost and with better castability. At Matson Iron Casting, we produce high-quality ductile iron components for demanding applications including automotive suspension, heavy machinery, pipeline fittings, and structural parts. With precise metallurgical control and heat treatment capabilities, we deliver grades from QT400 to QT800 that meet international standards (ASTM A536, ISO 1083).

Key Advantages

  • High strength comparable to steel – tensile strength up to 900 MPa
  • Good ductility and elongation – up to 18% elongation in ferritic grades
  • Suitable for heavy load applications – excellent fatigue resistance

Key Features

High Tensile Strength

Typical tensile strength ranges from 400 MPa to 900 MPa, comparable to low-carbon steel.

Excellent Toughness

Spheroidal graphite nodules prevent crack propagation, delivering superior impact strength.

Impact Resistance

Performs well under shock and dynamic loading; ideal for gears, brackets, and heavy equipment.

Heat Treatment Capability

Annealing, normalizing, and austempering (ADI) to achieve desired mechanical properties.
